Design for Six Sigma

Design Phase

  1. 1

What are the conceptual designs and associated technologies necessary to support the functional requirements?

How were these design concepts generated?

  2. 2

Have we documented the rationale for the design concept(s) selected?

Did the concept selection process consider things like design complexity, reliability, manufacturability, maintainability, sustainability, serviceability, etc.?

  3. 3

What are the risks associated with these designs with regard to cost, schedule, quality, etc.?

Have we accomplished an FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) on the prospective design(s)?

  4. 4

What are the potential tradeoffs to eliminate the projected failure modes?

  5. 5

Have we completed a requirements flowdown, while maintaining clear links to the performance CTCs?

  6. 6

What are the key input variables (or parameters) that affect the mean and the standard deviation of the measures of performance (the CTCs)?

And what kind of flexibility or latitude do we have for manipulating them?

  7. 7

What are the transfer functions for each of the critical outputs or CTCs?

And what is the current and projected capability of these performance measures?

  8. 8

Have we updated the DFSS Scorecard with the latest information based on the knowledge gained from this phase?
